The English Language Institute (ELI) of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, is a part of the Office of International Programs, whose goal is to help students from around the world achieve their academic and professional objectives. To that end, ELI provides an effective learning program where international students can improve their English communication skills in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. We understand the variety of English learning goals our students have and we make every effort to help them achieve these goals. Our students are important to us and we care about them and their needs.
Our objectives are to:
- Provide quality instruction in English using effective teaching methods and practical, motivating materials.
- Focus on a broad range of communicative teaching in order to:
- Develop our students' communication skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing)
- Strengthen their knowledge of language systems (grammar, lexis, phonology and function)
- Foster a greater understanding of culture in the United States and in the East Texas region among our students.
- Keep students motivated while maintaining a strong and steady improvement in their English skills and overall fluency.
- Provide the necessary library and technical services to support language learning.
- Help international students to become confident and proficient so that they can function independently and effectively in an English-speaking environment.
